NSW Window Tinting Laws
Frequently Asked Questions
Is 20% tint legal in NSW?
No, 20% tint is not legal on all windows in NSW. While NSW allows 20% VLT (Visible Light Transmission) on rear side windows and rear windscreen, front side windows must have a minimum of 35% VLT. The stricter 35% requirement for front windows ensures adequate visibility for the driver and allows police officers to see inside the vehicle for safety purposes. Installing 20% tint on front windows would result in defect notices, fines starting around $120, and potential issues with vehicle registration and insurance. Only the windscreen’s top 10% can be tinted (above the wiper sweep area), while no tint is permitted on the main windscreen area.
Is 20% or 35% tint darker?
20% tint is darker than 35% tint. Window tint percentages refer to Visible Light Transmission (VLT), which indicates how much light passes through the window – the lower the percentage, the darker the tint. While 35% tint allows 35% of visible light to pass through and blocks 65%, 20% tint only allows 20% of light through while blocking 80%. This makes 20% tint significantly darker with better privacy and heat rejection, though it may reduce visibility in low-light conditions compared to the lighter 35% option.
